If you have big hands, target a paddle with a grip circumference near 4.25 inches and a handle at least 5.25 inches long. Those two numbers matter far more than brand or paddle shape.

A grip that is too small forces you to squeeze harder, which kills touch and tires your forearm fast.

Grip circumference comes first

Most paddles ship with a grip around 4 to 4.25 inches. Big hands usually feel cramped at the low end. A larger circumference lets your fingers relax, which improves control and reduces the grip pressure that leads to fatigue and tennis elbow.

If you are unsure of your size, our pickleball paddle grip size guide walks through measuring your hand against grip numbers.

Handle length matters for big hands too

Handle length decides whether your bottom hand fits, especially if you play two-handed backhands. A handle of 5.5 inches or longer gives large hands and two-handed players room. Shorter handles near 4.5 inches leave your pinky hanging off the end.

Elongated paddles tend to carry longer handles, which is one reason they suit bigger hands. The tradeoff is a slightly smaller sweet spot.

Building up a grip you already own

You do not always need a new paddle. Adding an overgrip raises circumference by about 1/16 inch per wrap. Two wraps can take a 4.125 inch grip close to 4.25.

Weight changes when you add material, so check our paddle weight guide before stacking overgrips, since a heavier handle shifts the balance toward your hand.

Putting it together

Start with circumference, confirm the handle is long enough, then fine-tune with an overgrip. If you are choosing from scratch, the full process in how to choose a pickleball paddle folds grip fit into shape, weight, and core.

Get the grip right and the rest of the paddle finally feels like an extension of your hand instead of a tool you are fighting.
