What the rules say about edge guards
The USA Pickleball rulebook sets a combined length and width limit of 24 inches, counting any edge guard and butt cap. It puts no limit on thickness or weight.
Rule 3.D.6.a lists adding or replacing edge guard tape as an allowable alteration, as long as the altered paddle still meets every specification. The equipment standards add that tape and decals may extend no more than 0.5 inch inside the outer edge, or inside the guard if one is fitted.
Why makers single out edgeless paddles
Selkirk describes its edgeless DuraEdge as an impact-resistant blend of composites and polymer, introduced for durability and aerodynamics. It also says those edges cannot be repaired or replaced.
That is why its instructor recommends tape on edgeless paddles while calling it not strictly necessary. Tape is for minor contact, and the same video says it will not survive a hard smash into the ground or a wall.
How to apply edge tape
The video above shows the order. Clean the rim with a damp cloth first, then measure the tape across the top of the paddle by eye so it sits evenly.
Stretch the tape slightly so it folds into a U shape, start at one end and smooth it down to the other. If you misplace it, peel it back and reapply, then press out creases and bubbles.
