Pickleball Grip Tape: Replacement Cadence and Overgrip Layers
Pickleball grip tape wears out on feel, not on a calendar. Learn the replacement triggers, what each overgrip layer adds to grip size, and how to build up.

Replace pickleball grip tape on feel, not on a calendar. Once the surface goes glossy and your hand slides on the follow through, the wrap has stopped absorbing and no amount of squeezing brings the tack back.
Session count beats week count. Someone sweating through three outdoor sessions burns a wrap faster than a twice-a-week indoor player does in a month.
Heavy sweaters hit the first two signs long before the tape looks worn. If that is you, the material matters more than the schedule, and the best overgrip for sweaty hands will stretch your cadence more than wrapping tighter ever will.
Every layer you add changes your grip size. Selkirk publishes circumference for most of its grip options, and its double grip is literally one comfort grip wrapped over another.

| Grip setup | Stated circumference | Added paddle weight |
|---|---|---|
| Selkirk Thin Grip | Not stated | 0.2 oz lighter than the Comfort Grip |
| Selkirk Comfort Grip (standard) | 4.25 in | Baseline |
| Selkirk Contour Grip | 4.25 in | Not stated |
| Selkirk Double Grip (Comfort over Comfort) | 4.5 in | 0.4 oz average: 0.5 oz on Maxima, Epic and Invikta, 0.4 oz on S2, 0.3 oz on Omni |
Manufacturer figures from the Selkirk grip guide.
That doubled setup moves the handle from 4.25 in to 4.5 in, a quarter inch, which is the same step most brands use between grip sizes. So a second wrap is not a small tweak. Measure first and read the pickleball paddle grip size method before you add anything.
Stacking overgrips is the cheapest way to fatten a handle you otherwise like. Wrap length decides how far up the throat you can go: Franklin lists its pickleball overgrip at 43.3 in long and 0.98 in wide, while GAMMA Supreme comes in at 41 in long and 1.06 in wide.
Long fingers usually need length more than thickness, which is where a taller wrap earns its place. The fit logic for a pickleball paddle for big hands applies here too.
If two overgrips feel mushy, swap the base grip instead. Tourna lists its leather replacement grip at 1 in wide by 46 in long and 1.8 mm thick, and its Pro Tour thin replacement grip at 1.5 mm, so you can change firmness without stacking dead material.
Start at the butt cap with the tapered end, keep light tension, and overlap each turn by about a third of the tape width. Consistent overlap is what keeps the handle round instead of ridged.
Finish under the flare with the supplied finishing tape rather than electrical tape, which slips once it warms up. Franklin includes three finishing tapes with its three-grip pack.
Never wrap fresh tape over a dead layer. The old wrap holds moisture against the new one and you lose the tack in days.
