Pickleball is played to 11, win by 2, and only the serving team scores. You serve underhand and diagonally, clear the 7 foot kitchen, and never volley while touching it. In doubles, call the score as three numbers: your points, their points, then your server number.
Every figure on this page comes from the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook: a 20 by 44 foot court, a net that is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 at the center, and a kitchen 7 feet deep on each side.
Most beginner arguments are about one foot, one number or one bounce, and the rulebook settles each of them. The call builder below does the arithmetic for you.

Formula: the serving team calls its score, the receiving score, then the server number (6.B.2); the server stands on the right when the serving score is zero or even and on the left when it is odd (5.A.1, 5.B.3). Standard scoring, game to 11 and win by 2.
Serve underhand, diagonally across the net, over the kitchen, and inside the correct service court.
At least one foot must be on the ground behind the baseline when you hit, and neither foot may touch the court or the area outside your serving area. You have 10 seconds after the score call to serve.
A volley serve needs the paddle moving upward, the paddle head no higher than your wrist, and the ball no higher than your waist. A drop serve lets the ball bounce first, but you must release it from natural height and add no force.
A serve may touch the net and still be good. One that lands on the kitchen line is out, and our pickleball serve without faulting guide covers the common foot faults.

Only the serving team scores, and the first side to 11 wins, typically by at least 2 points.
The server keeps serving, alternating sides, until the team loses a rally. In doubles both partners serve before a side out, except at the start of a game, when only the starting server serves. That is why the opening call is zero, zero, two.
Rally scoring, where either team scores on every rally, is a provisionally approved option in the rulebook. Assume standard scoring unless the organizer says otherwise.
If the calls still confuse you, pickleball scoring explained walks through a full game point by point.
You cannot volley while you, or anything you wear or carry, touches the kitchen.
You can stand in the kitchen to hit a ball that has bounced. The fault is volleying with contact, and it includes momentum that carries you into the zone after the hit, even once the ball is dead. After touching the zone you must get both feet fully outside it before your next volley.
The lines belong to the zone, so a toe on the line counts. The kitchen rule in pickleball page breaks down the momentum cases with examples.
The return of serve must bounce, and so must the serving team’s first return, before anyone may volley.
That is why the serving team cannot rush the net on the first shot, and why the third shot is usually a drop or a drive.
Standard games go to 11, and you typically need a 2-point lead, so a game can run past 11. The 2026 rulebook also lists single games to 15 or 21 as tournament formats.
At the start of a game only the starting server serves before a side out, so that player counts as the second server. The doubles call is serving score, receiving score, then server number: zero, zero, two.
Yes. A serve may touch the net, but it must still clear the opponent's kitchen and land in the correct diagonal service court. A serve that lands on the kitchen line is out.
You can stand on it, but you cannot volley while touching it, because every line that bounds the kitchen is part of the zone. Hit the ball after it bounces, or step back first.
