Padel is played on an enclosed 10 by 20 meter court with a perforated solid racket and a pressurized ball, scored like tennis. Pickleball uses a 20 by 44 foot court and a perforated plastic ball, played to 11. Pick pickleball for a small footprint, padel if you have room for walls.

The two sports look alike from the parking lot, but the official rules split them on court size, equipment and scoring. The International Padel Federation and USA Pickleball both publish the numbers.

Below you will find pickleball starter gear, a table of the rule differences, and a calculator that counts how many of each court fit your space.

Formula: whole courts across the width times whole courts along the length, trying both orientations. Padel uses the 10 by 20 m interior from the FIP rules; wall thickness and the 6 m free height are not counted. Pickleball uses the 30 by 60 ft minimum playing surface.

Which court is bigger, padel or pickleball?

Padel, by a wide margin: a padel court is 10 by 20 meters, about 2,150 square feet, against 880 square feet for a pickleball court.

That is roughly 2.4 times the area, and padel adds walls and fence around it. A pickleball court needs only flat ground and a net, which is why a driveway or a converted tennis court can host it.

Our pickleball court dimensions page lists every line in feet and meters.

How is a padel racket different from a pickleball paddle?

A padel racket has a perforated hitting surface and a longer body, up to 45.5 centimeters, while a pickleball paddle tops out at 17 inches long.

The pickleball manual states no weight restriction, and the FIP rules text sets none either. The ball is the bigger difference: padel uses a pressurized ball, pickleball a plastic ball with 26 to 40 holes.

If you come from racket sports, our guide to a pickleball paddle for tennis players covers what carries over.

Does padel or pickleball cost more to start?

Neither rulebook quotes a price, so this page does not either. The cost difference sits in the court.

Pickleball needs a net and lines on a flat surface. Padel needs an enclosure with 3 meter walls topped by fence, and at least 6 meters of free height above the court.
